Neighbourhood participation in street art projects is a unique chance to create public support. On top of that, it is a chance for locals to co-create an artwork that will define the neighbourhood. In doing so, the artwork will give a stronger sense of belonging to the people. It will enhance dialogue, solidarity and responsibility. And it’s fun!
Participation can be activated in the design phase, in the making of the artwork and in the use of the artwork afterwards. There is no age to participation, nor are there many thresholds. The key is using the right techniques and methodologies.
I'm doing artistic research in neighbourhood participation. I worked with children, adults and local artists. They participate as a model, as an artist painting the artwork on a small scale, as participants in the wallpainting and as signifiers giving the artwork use and meaning.
